After 5 years your tree should be 9 feet tall (photo 2); after 10 years almost 20 feet tall (photo 3). Prized as shade and ornamental trees. One of the first trees to leaf out in spring (light green turning to dark green). Cones of showy white flowers in May become shiny chestnuts in fall (not edible). Can be grown in pots (last photo).
An east tree it tolerates many soil types (including clay), salt spray, and occasional pruning in late winter (if necessary). Full sun or partial shade.
